Texas summers can push temperatures past 100 degrees, and kids overheat faster than adults do. The simplest way to keep your child safe is steady hydration, light clothing, and regular shade breaks. A few small habits go a long way toward a safe, fun summer outside.
Children’s bodies heat up faster than adult bodies, and they cool down more slowly. They also may not recognize or say when they’re overheating. That makes it up to the adults around them to watch closely and act early.
Look for flushed cheeks, heavy sweating, or unusual fussiness in the heat. Dizziness, headache, or a lack of sweating can signal something more serious. If your child shows these signs, move them to shade or air conditioning right away.
Offer water often, even before your child feels thirsty. On hot days, little ones need more fluids than they might ask for. A reusable water bottle they can carry makes sipping easy throughout the day.
Lightweight, light-colored, breathable clothing helps kids stay cooler outside. A wide-brimmed hat adds shade for the face and neck. Planning outdoor play for early morning or evening avoids the hottest part of the day.
At The Sandbox Learning Center, we adjust our outdoor play schedule to keep kids safe and comfortable all summer. We watch the heat just as closely as we watch the sun.

We shorten outdoor time and add extra water and shade breaks when needed. On very hot days, we move more activities indoors. Your child’s comfort and safety always come first.
This varies by age, activity level, and how hot the day is. As a general guide, offer water often and don’t wait for thirst. Your pediatrician can offer specific guidance for your child.
A labeled water bottle and light, breathable clothing are always helpful. Please also send a hat if your child will spend time outside. Let your teacher know about any heat sensitivities to watch for.
