What your child needs for daycare changes as they grow. Infants need more supplies, while school-age kids need very little. A quick, age-based checklist takes the guesswork out of what to send each day.
Infants typically need the most supplies of any age group. Pack enough diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes for the full day. Bottles, formula or breast milk, and comfort items should be labeled clearly.
Label everything, even small items like pacifiers and bottle lids. Labeled items are easier for teachers to track. This small step also helps avoid mix-ups with other children’s belongings.
Toddlers need fewer supplies than infants, but consistency still helps. Pack extra clothes for messy play, plus a comfort item. If your toddler is potty training, extra underwear helps too.
Preschoolers generally need less daily gear, but a few basics still help. A labeled water bottle and spare clothes cover most situations. Weather gear, like a jacket or rain boots, helps too.
School-age kids need the least daily packing of any group. A water bottle, a snack if not provided, and homework materials usually cover it. Older kids can often pack their own bag with a little guidance.

At The Sandbox Learning Center, our team helps new families settle into packing routines during our enrollment process. For infants especially, it can feel like a lot to manage. Our post on the first year of learning through play and care covers more on that stage.
Two changes of clothes work well for infants and toddlers. One extra change is usually enough for preschoolers and older kids. Weather and activity level can mean packing a bit more.
This depends on your center’s meal policy. At Sandbox, we provide breakfast, lunch, and two daily snacks. Ask your center what’s included and what to send.
Labeling everything clearly is the most effective method. Consider a designated bag just for daycare items. Checking in with your child’s teacher weekly helps catch anything missing.
