Moving from a crib to a big-kid bed is a big milestone. It can feel exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Every toddler is ready at a different time. No need to rush this transition. We think about timing the same way we think about meeting developmental milestones in our classrooms, always at each child’s own pace.
A few common cues can help you know it’s time:
There is no perfect age for every child. Watch your toddler’s cues rather than a calendar.
Try to keep the same room, bedding, and lighting during the switch. Familiar surroundings make the transition feel less overwhelming. Save big room changes for another time if possible. One change at a time is easier for toddlers.
Once your toddler can wander at night, safety matters even more. A few steps make a real difference:
A safe space helps everyone sleep more peacefully.
Some toddlers pop out of bed a few times before settling in. This is completely normal and usually temporary. Calm, consistent responses work better than big reactions. Most toddlers adjust within a couple of weeks.

A small celebration helps your toddler feel proud of the change. New sheets or a special stuffed animal can help. Positive attention makes the transition feel like an adventure. This kind of encouragement is something we carry into every stage of care, no matter how big or small the milestone.
Most toddlers switch between two and three years old, but readiness varies.
Stay calm and consistent. A predictable bedtime routine usually helps within a few weeks.
Either works well. Choose based on your child’s comfort and how much floor space your room allows.
At The Sandbox Learning Center, we believe every milestone, big or small, deserves patience and support. Schedule a tour to see how we support your child through every stage of growth.
