Most parents use less sunscreen than their child actually needs. The right amount is about one ounce, or a full shot glass, for exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, and right after swimming or sweating. July is UV Safety Awareness Month, making it a great time to build better sun habits.
Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum protection blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are gentler on sensitive skin. Many pediatricians recommend mineral formulas for younger children.
Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before heading outside. This gives skin time to absorb it fully. Common missed spots include ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of feet. Hairlines and lips also need coverage on sunny days.
One morning application will not last all day. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours during outdoor play. Swimming, sweating, or towel-drying all wash sunscreen away faster. If your child has been in the water, it is time to reapply.
Sunscreen works best as one part of a bigger strategy. Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing adds an easy extra layer. Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses protect the face and eyes. Shade during peak UV hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., cuts exposure further. Staying hydrated also helps kids regulate their body temperature outside.
At The Sandbox Learning Center, sun safety is part of daily outdoor play. This holds true across our infant and toddler programs and active time in our before and after school care. Staff can apply parent-provided sunscreen following our written permission policy. We reapply on the same two-hour schedule recommended by pediatricians. Please label your child’s sunscreen clearly with their name.
What if my child has sensitive skin?
Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide are usually a gentler option. Let your child’s teacher know about any allergies or skin sensitivities. We are happy to store and use a specific brand you provide.
Is sunscreen enough, or should my child avoid the sun entirely?
Some sun exposure is healthy and supports vitamin D production. The goal is smart protection, not total avoidance. We balance active outdoor play with shade, hats, and sunscreen.
