For most young children, hands-on and human-led learning still matters more than AI tools. Young children learn best through play, movement, and real relationships, not screens alone. AI apps can have a place, but only as a small supplement, not a replacement.
Children under five learn primarily through their senses and direct experience. Touching, building, and exploring physical objects builds understanding in a way screens can’t. Social interaction with adults and peers also plays a major role in early learning.
A screen can show a child a shape, but building one teaches more. Physical play builds fine motor skills, coordination, and real problem-solving ability. These skills form the foundation for later academic learning, including with technology.
AI apps can offer personalized pacing, which may help with specific skills like letter recognition. Some tools adapt to a child’s level in ways a worksheet can’t. Used sparingly, this kind of app can be one small piece of a bigger learning picture.
At The Sandbox Learning Center, our developmentally appropriate curriculum centers on play, movement, and real relationships. We believe young children need people and hands-on experiences first. Technology, including AI, will always come second to that foundation.

Neither, on their own. What matters most is how and how much they’re used. As a small supplement to hands-on learning, they can be fine in moderation.
Play, movement, books, and conversation should make up most of a young child’s day. These experiences build the skills AI apps simply can’t replicate. Screens, including AI tools, work best as a small addition, not the main event.
Most children benefit more from hands-on learning throughout early childhood. If you do introduce an AI app, keep sessions brief and supervised. Watch how your child responds, and prioritize real-world play first.
